World’s first baby born using DNA from three people- For the first time in the world, a baby has been born using the DNA of three people. The BBC reported that the baby was born safely in a hospital in Newcastle, UK.

‘Mitochondrial Donation Treatment’ (MDT) technique was used to give birth to a child. The child’s mother had a disease called ‘mitochondrial’, so the help of a woman who donated DNA was taken.

This disease causes problems like nervous system, cardiac arrhythmia (abnormal heart beat), diabetes, effects on body growth. Similarly, a child born to a woman with this disease may also die. It is an incurable disease.

Many have lost their children due to this. For that reason, it is mentioned in the BBC news that the donor woman’s DNA was used to give birth to the child.

In the MDT procedure, the nucleus (a membrane-bound organelle found in eukaryotic cells) of the mother’s egg is removed and the nucleus of the donor’s egg is replaced. It makes the mother’s DNA along with the mitochondria in the egg of the donor woman into the embryo.

It is said that the child’s DNA contains 99.9 percent of his parents and 0.1 percent of the donor woman. Similarly, the child will get the DNA of the donor woman along with the parents. But it is said that the DNA obtained from the donor woman will only be used to improve the mitochondria of the child.

Mitochondria are small parts inside the cell. It converts the food we eat into energy. This technology is said to help mothers with mitochondrial diseases to have children.

But some have opposed this method. The British Parliament had given approval for this work in 2015. Similarly, the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) also agreed to it.

Some people say this technology is good and some people oppose it. Although the baby was born on March 9, the doctors have not disclosed more information about the baby due to confidentiality. But a baby was born in Mexico in 2016 using MDT technology.
