First Elephant Arrives in U.S. (1796)

First Elephant Arrives in U.S. (1796)- On this day (April 13) in 1776, the first elephant was brought to America. The two-year-old elephant was brought to New York in the US by boat from Kolkata, India. After being transported to America, the elephant was put on display on the streets of New York.

The elephant was moved from Kolkata on December 3, 1975. Jacob Crowninchild spent 450 US dollars to transport the elephant to America. But later he sold the elephant for 10 thousand US dollars.

At the time, newspaper ads were placed in various locations across the United States where the general public paid 25 to 50 cents to see the elephant. The elephant was kept on display for several years. 28 years later, in 1804, the second elephant was brought to America.
